Evolution and development: Crete, 14-20 October

Article Abstract:

An European Community-funded symposium on the subject of evolution and development was organized in Hersonnisos, Crete, by the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology in Heraklion in Oct 1991. Discussions during the symposium, entitled 'Evolution and Development: Thirty Years after the Jacob-Monod Paradigm,' reflected the growing concern to unite evolution and development, which have long maintained independence from each other until breakthroughs in genetic studies demonstrated the intrinsic links between them.

Antibiotic resistance: origins, evolution and spread

Article Abstract:

Bacterial antibiotic resistance has reached global proportions because of the extensive use of antibiotics. Strains that have developed resistance to antibiotics include Mycobacterium, Streptococcus and Staphylococcus. Hospitals have been blamed as the main breeding centers of bacteria which are resistant to antibiotics. The excessive use of avoparcin in animal feed also resulted in vancomycin-resistant enterococci in human beings.

Exploring the nuclear envelope's properties and roles

Article Abstract:

The nuclear envelope (NE) and its immediate subcellular environs are the focus of the symposium titled "Nuclear organization in development and disease" where the basic features and known molecular composition of the NE are introduced. The presentations dealt with general aspects of the structure and function of the NE, while the remaining half focused on specific disease conditions associated with NE and lamina components.
