From transcript to protein

Article Abstract:

Progress made in finding the mechanisms involved in RNA maturation, translation and transport was discussed at a workshop held at the Juan March Foundation in Madrid. Discoveries in genes and gene products using biochemical and genetic techniques help to determine how RNA structures and sequences are recognized. Work on RNA transport reveals that RNA-binding proteins play a crucial role in establishing the localization and transport of RNA and many RNA transport machineries also take part in protein transport.

A nuclear export signal in hnRNP A1: a signal-mediated, temperature-dependent nuclear protein export pathway

Article Abstract:

Shuttling heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs) act as carriers of mRNA to the cytoplasm. The M9 region in hnRNP A1 with 38 amino acids acts as the element that allows nuclear export. The fusion of M9 to the nonshuttling nucleoplasmim core domain (NPc) facilitates its transport to the cytoplasm in temperature dependent manner. M9 is similar to the nuclear localization signal (NLS) sequences, but differs in the ability to allow the transport of nucleoplasmic core domain.

A novel receptor-mediated nuclear protein import pathway

Article Abstract:

The study demonstrates the nuclear import specificity of the 38-amino acid domain M9 and the classical nuclear localization signal NLS through varied routes. Nuclear protein import of NLS necessitates alpha and beta importins whereas that of M9 does not need any. A protein that specifically interacts with wild-type M9 is identified. The protein, called transportin, facilitates the nuclear import of proteins bearing wild-type M9 but not those with NLS.
