Gene expression per gene dose, a specific measure of gene expression in aquatic microorganisms

Article Abstract:

The utilization of the combination of target mRNA and target DNA quantitation for measuring specific levels of gene expression is discussed. Antisense and and sense single-stranded RNA gene probes were used to detect and recover from replicate samples both target mRNA and DNA. A beta-scanner was used to perform radiomtric detection quantitation. The suitability of mRNA for determining relative gene abundance at the transcriptional level in water column microbial populations was demonstrated.

Diversity of the ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase form I gene (rbcL) in natural phytoplankton communities

Article Abstract:

Marine research has identified five different gene sequences that express the Calvin cycle enzyme ribulose-1,5-biphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase. Genetic analysis of the form I gene rbcL was performed on natural phytoplankton communities from the open seas. The genetic sequence of Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus rbcL genes are given. Evidence suggests that chemoautotrophic microorganisms are involved in marine euphotic zone carbon-fixing reactions.

Diel rhythms in ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase and glutamine synthetase gene expression in a natural population of marine picoplanktonic cyanobacteria (Synechococcus spp.)

Article Abstract:

There appears to be a temporal separation of carbon and nitrogen assimilation in the marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus. This was the conclusion of researchers who discovered temporal and reciprocal oscillations in the production of ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase and glutamine synthetase.
