Genetic manipulation of polyphosphate metabolism affects cadmium tolerance in Escherichia coli

Article Abstract:

The growth of Escherichia coli mutant cells containing multiple copies of the polyphosphate kinase (ppk) gene and exopolyPase (ppx) gene is unaffected by an increase in cadmium (Cd) concentration. The growth of cells with mutations in ppk and ppx or multiple copies of ppk decreases with an increase in Cd concentration. Mutant strains with multiple ppk and ppx copies produce polyP while the other mutants fail to do so. Cd tolerance is probably due to the hydrolysis of polyP rather than its formation. The growth of all strains is suppressed at a Cd concentration of 4 ppm.

Locations effects of a reporter gene on expression levels and on native protein synthesis in Lactococcus lactis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Article Abstract:

The introduction of a foreign gene into a microorganism can change the expression of native proteins. In a study of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Lactococcus lactis, protein expression was altered between three- and 14-fold when the foreign reporter gene gusA was inserted.
