Hedgehog and Spitz: making a match between photoreceptor axons and their targets
Article Abstract:
Investigations into the Drosophila visual system have led to the identification of two popular developmental cues, Hedgehog (HH) and the epidermal growth factor-like ligand Spitz, as anterograde signals that control the proliferation and differentiation of target cells. Studies indicated that HH acts directly on lamina precursor cells to stimulate proliferation while Spitz acts after HH signaling to stimulate neuronal differentiation.

Vertebrate slit, a secreted ligand for the transmembrane protein Roundabout, is a repellent for olfactory bulb axons
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine the repellent guiding olfactory bulb axons to the telencephalon during olfactory information processing. Results of the experiment with Drosophila show that this function is being done by the Slit protein, which expressed in the septum. The Slit protein binds with the transmembrane protein Roundabout, which is found in the olfactory bulb, and acts as a chemorepellent for olfactory bulb axons.

Signal transduction in neuronal migration: roles of GTPase activating proteins and the small GTPase Cdc42 in the Slit-Robo pathway
Article Abstract:
Research shows that Rho GTPase activating proteins (GAPs) and Cdc42 are involved in neuronal migration. Data suggest that GAPs and Cdc42 mediate the repulsive response to Slit protein through a pathway that leads to an interaction between Slit protein and the transmembrane receptor Roundabout Robo in the regulation of actin polymerization.
