Histone acetylation and chromatin assembly: a single escort, multiple dances?

Article Abstract:

The transmission of genetic material to daughter cells and the establishment of specific gene expression patterns is directly influenced by the compaction of eukaryotic DNA into chromatin. However, the processes of chromatin assembly, histone synthesis and nucleosome assembly are not yet fully understood. Recent findings indicate, however, that common p48 subunits can coordinate histone acetylation, deacetylation and chromatin assembly. Moreover, these subunits, together with other factors involved in these processes play significant roles in regulating cell proliferation.

Pddp1p, a novel chromodomain-containing protein, links heterochromatin assembly and DNA elimination in tetrahymena

Article Abstract:

The gene encoding for the abundant p65 protein is cloned and renamed PDD1 for programmed DNA degradation. The PDD1 gene sequence is shown to predict a novel polypeptide containing two copies of a chromodomain, a conserved domain common in heterochromatin-associated proteins. Results indicate a molecular link between programmed DNA degradation and heterochromatin assembly.

RNA meets chromatin

Article Abstract:

RNA and chromatin are closely intertwined in a remarkably large number of biological systems. The implications for noncoding RNAs, the formation of specialized chromatin domains in various epigenetic processes as diverse as dosage compensation, RNA interface-mediated heterochromatin assembly and gene silencing, and programmed DNA elimination are discussed.
