In memoriam: Peter Thorogood (1947-1998)
Article Abstract:
Peter Thorogood is a developmental biologist known for his works on the cranial structure development and etiology of birth defects of the head and neck. He earned a degree in Zoology from the University of Aberystwyth in Wales and worked on his PhD degree under Prof Richard Hincliffe. He made researches on the bone and cartilage formation during development and was a pioneer in the analysis of changes in cell behavior in the developing fin bud of fishes in vivo. He preferred the outdoor life which unfortunately led to his demise on Aug 25, 1998 due to a climbing accident in the Swiss Alps.

In memoriam: Nigel Holder (July 2, 1953 - December 11, 1998)
Article Abstract:
Biologist Nigel Holder earned his undergraduate degree in botany at the Imperial College in London, England, and finished his PhD in developmental biology under the supervision of Lewis Wolpert. His focus of interest was on limb development and at the age of 25, he accepted a lectureship in the Anatomy Dept of King's College London. He became the director of the Developmental Biology Research Center at King's College and was mainly responsible for the center's success. He was diagnosed with a rare form of vasculitis in 1992 but that did not stop him from his research work.

Developmental biologist Peter D. Nieuwkoop died at the age of 79, on Sep. 18, 1996. He is best known for his work in neural induction, meso-endoderm induction, germ cell formation in chordates and other areas of vertebrate development. Nieuwkoop, who was born in Enschede, the Netherlands, promoted the use of Xenopus and urodeles in embryology research. He also served as Hubrecht Laboratorium director from 1953-1980 and University of Utrecht zoology professor from 1956-1984.
