In situ hybridization of Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus (marine cyanobacteria) spp. with rRNA-targeted peptide nucleic acid probes

Article Abstract:

Combining whole-cell hybridization with flow cytometry can be used to analyze marine cyanobacterial picoplankton. The technique uses fluorescently labeled rRNA-targeted peptide nucleic acid probes. The technique was used to detect Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus in samples of ocean water.

Application of digital image analysis and flow cytometry to enumerate marine viruses stained with SYBR Gold

Article Abstract:

The nucleic acid stain SYBR Gold can be used in combination with digital image analysis and flow cytometry to measure viruses in aquatic environments. Estimates produced by this technique were higher than those produced by epifluorescence microscopy and transmission electron microscopy.

Distribution, isolation, host specificity, and diversity of cyanophages infecting marine Synechococcus spp. in river estuaries

Article Abstract:

Researchers found diverse cyanophages infecting the marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus in three Georgia coastal rivers. Most were cyanomyoviruses and their abundance increased as salinity increased.
