Inactivation of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in simulated human gastric fluid

Article Abstract:

The interactions between Escherichia coli O157:H7 and the gastric environment, including comparisons with Shigella spp. are reported. In order to understand the kinetics of Escherichia coli O157:H7 survival in gastric fluid, individual Escherichia coli O157:H7 were suspended in various media mixed at various proportions with simulated human gastric fluid and then, incubated at 37 degree Celsius for up to 4 h.

Slugs: Potential novel vectors of Escherichia coli O157

Article Abstract:

Studies were conducted in the field and laboratory, to determine the action of slugs as novel vectors for pathogen transfer from animal feces to salad vegetables. It was observed that the persistence of Escherichia coli for up to three weeks in excreted slug feces showed that slugs have the potential to act as novel vectors of E. coli O157.

Reduction of Escherichia coli O157:H7 populations in cattle by addition of colicin E7-producing E.coli to feed

Article Abstract:

Studies done to evaluate the ability of colincinogenic E. coli that produces colicin E7 to reduce the prevalence of E. coli O157:H7 in cattle are presented. Results suggest that a daily dose of 10 (super 8) CFU of colicin E7-producing E.coli per gram of feed can significantly reduce the fecal shedding of O157:H7 in cattle.
