Incorporating psychological health into biocultural models: Preliminary findings from Turkana women of Kenya

Article Abstract:

The potential benefits and limitations of including psychological stress data in a biocultural framework of human adaptability are investigated. The results have suggested that most sensitive indicators of Kenya's Turkana women's psychological experiences are culturally defined idioms of distress, which showed high concordance with measures of first-day salivary cortisol, whereas the other differences in stress reactivity are associated with the frequent movement of encampments, major herd losses and direct experiences of livestock raiding.
