Interleukin-2 signaling and inherited immunodeficiency
Article Abstract:
Interleukin-2 (IL-1) signaling and inherited immunodeficiency are discussed in connection with current understanding of the related cytokine receptors, the Janus (Jak) family of tyrosine kinases, and the family of signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT) transcription factors. Cytokine signaling pathways that control T-cell expansion and apoptosis are still not well understood, but it can be seen that downstream regulation of cytokine responses is surprisingly complex and that some targets for therapeutic intervention exist.

Rethinking risks to human subjects in genetic research
Article Abstract:
Obtaining community consensus for genetic research on a socially identifiable population is a worthy goal, but should not be regarded as an ethical or legal requirement. Although genetic discrimination is a valid concern, eventually knowledge of genetics should reduce prejudices rather than promote them. Researchers in human genetics should be sensitive to the potential harmfulness of the information they acquire, although the nature of the harm may be impossible to predict.

Insights from model systems: a model of elegance
Article Abstract:
Using the worm's biological structure as a model can help researchers determine responses in human systems. Worm gene interactions and functions provide a better understanding of the same processes in humans, making worms a valuable asset to drug discovery. Worm anatomy and cell biology is easily mapped and accessed via computer programs for genomic sequencing projects.
