Is persistent bacterial infection good for your health?

Article Abstract:

A persistent bacterial infection indicates longstanding interaction between microorganism and a host and when caused by a pathogen the initial interaction with the host is associated with degree of tissue invasion and damage. The continued study of distinction between priming the immune system to prevent infection and the inability to clear natural infection will prove to be instructive in understanding the biology of both microbe and host.

Gastroenteritis and the far more virulent disease of plague are both caused by the bacterial pathogen Yersinia spp., one of several historically devastating pathogens that are an increasing bio-defense and antibiotic resistance concern. The multidomain protein Yersinia protein kinase A (YpkA) is a critical virulence determinant and a solution to the crystal structure of a YpkA-Rac1 complex is presented.
