Isolation of new Aureobasidium strains that produce high-molecular-weight pullulan with reduced pigmentation
Article Abstract:
New strains of Aureobasidium pullulans were isolated from plant leaf surfaces gathered in San Diego County, CA. The isolates were polymorphic, but were identified as A. pullulans on the basis of morphological, microscopic and molecular genetic evidence. Mutants with reduced pigmentation and tendency toward yeastlike growth were obtained by ethidium bromide treatment. Some of the isolates as well as some derived mutants produced pullulan of high molecular weight. There was an inverse relation between yield and polymer molecular weight.

Malt-yeast extract-sugar agar, a suitable medium for enumeration and isolation of fungi from silage
Article Abstract:
The potential of malt-yeast extract-sucrose agar (MYSA) as a medium for routine mycological examinations of silage was investigated. MYSA was compared with dichloran-rose bengal medium in mycological examinations of more than 500 big bale grass silage samples. Fungi grown on MYSA exhibited greater colony size. MYSA also showed significantly lower levels of bacterial growth. These results indicate that MYSA is an effective medium for mycological examinations.

In situ biosurfactant production by Bacillus strains injected into a limestone petroleum reservoir
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine whether two Bacillus strains that produce lipopeptide biosurfactants could metabolize and produce their biosurfactants in an oil reservoir. The result data shows that in situ biosurfactant production is possible and occurred in amounts exceeding the engineering criterion for mobilizing oil from sandstone cores.
