Isolation of typical marine bacteria by dilution culture: growth, maintenance, and characteristics of isolates under laboratory conditions

Article Abstract:

Seawater samples collected from Resurrection Bay, Seward, AK, were subjected to dilution culturing to isolate dominant marine bacteria. Viability values between 30-40% were frequently observed. The isolated cultures were either obligate or facultative oligotrophs at the sampling time, but could adapt to form colonies on solid medium containing higher nutrient concentrations. Experiments conducted to determine affinity values for mixed amino acids by a dilution culture and an isolate showed that the affinity values of these representative samples were comparable to those of natural bacterioplankton.

A marine oligobacterium harboring genes known to be part of aromatic hydrocarbon degradation pathways of soil pseudomonads

Article Abstract:

The marine oligobacterium Cycloclasticus oligotrophus RB1 contains xylM, K, G, C1 and C2 open reading frames that are similar to the genes used for metabolism of aromatic hydrocarbons by other bacteria. The genes contain 57% A+T, have multiple transcription units and are preceded by a ribosome binding region. XylK protein has glutathione S-transferase activity, XylG has 2-hydroxy-5-methyl-6-oxohexa-2,4-dienoate dehydrogenase activity, while XylM is probably an integral membrane protein. XylC1 and XylC2 are similar to the subunits of the iron sulfur protein part of the biphenyl dioxygenase.

Microbial conversion products of leptomycin B

Article Abstract:

Leptomycin B (LMB) is a secondary metabolite generated by Streptomyces sp. strain ATS 1287 that has recently been found to have antiproliferative activity aside from having antifungal and antitumor effects. A study was conducted to identify LMB derivatives with reduced antiproliferative activities but preserved levels of inhibition of the nuclear export of the human immuno-deficiency virus type 1 regulatory protein Rev. Several LMB derivatives were found after screening 29 bacterial and 72 fungal strains.
