Brachyspira (Serpulina) hyodysenteriae gyrB mutants and interstrain transfer of coumermycin A(sub 1) resistance

Article Abstract:

The bacteriophage-like agent VSH-1 can transfer the gyrB gene mutation for coumermycin resistance between strains of Brachyspira (Serpulina) hyodysenteriae. This organism causes swine dysentery.

Isolation of tetracycline-resistant Megasphaera elsdenii strains with novel mosaic gene combinations of tet(O) and tet(W) from swine

Article Abstract:

Anaerobic bacteria are isolated from cecal contents and cecal tissues of pigs and they are identified as Megasphaera elsdenii strains based on their coccus morphology, growth on lactate, and 16S ribosomal DNAsequence similarities with M. elsdenii LC-1. Sequence data indicate that M. elsdeni genes undergo interclass or double-crossover recombination involving tet(O) and tet(W) genes.

Isolation, oxygen sensitivity, and virulence of NADH oxidase mutants of the anaerobic spirochete Brachyspira (Serpulina) hyodysenteriae, etiologic agent of swine dysentery

Article Abstract:

Research conducted on the production of Brachyspira (Serpulina) hyodysenteriae mutant strains that lack NADH oxidase activity is presented. Results include a possible role of NADH oxidase in oxygen sensitivity of B. hyodysenteriae and the effect of NADH oxidase loss on the virulence of spirochete pathogen for swine.
