Laboratory-dependent bacterial ecology: A cautionary tale
Article Abstract:
An attempt is made to find out whether laboratory dependence is real and quantifiable even in the popular model Escherichia coli. Laboratory effects alter the equilibrium composition of a simple community composed of two strains of E. coli by ruling out changes in the bacterial strains, chemical batches, and human handling but implicate differences in growth medium, especially the water component.

Dominant microbial composition and its vertical distribution in saline meromictic Lake Kaiike (Japan) as revealed by quantitative oilgonucleotide probe membrane hybridization
Article Abstract:
The vertical distributions of dominant bacterial populations in saline meromictic Lake Kaiike were investigated throughout the water column and sediment by quantitative oligonucleotide probe membrane hybridization. The results of the study suggested that this approach was very effective in covering dominant populations.

Optimization of annealing temperature to reduce bias caused by a primer mismatch in multitemplate PCR
Article Abstract:
Running PCR cycles at a low annealing temperature can reduce the number of primer mismatches. This was the conclusion of researchers who did a PCR analysis of Pediococcus acidilactici and Micrococcus luteus.
