Lack, Skutch, and Moreau: The early development of life-history thinking

Article Abstract:

Articles by Reginald Moreau, Alexander Skutch and David Lack in the 1940s set the stage for the development of thinking about avian life histories. Lack was concerned about the issue of individual vs. group selection and his strong convictions forced biologists to confront certain important problems. Skutch brought a rich empirical background to the debate and Moreau envisioned the diverse evolutionary forces.

Density dependence, evolutionary optimization, and the diversification of Avian life histories

Article Abstract:

The seminal publications of David Lack, Alexander Skutch and Reginald Moreau have provided much information about avian life histories, but there are still no adequate explanations for certain basic patterns of variation in life history traits among birds. Resolution of this basic issues will need innovative empirical, modeling and experimental approaches, and a broadening of the evolutionary ecology paradigm.

RAPD-PCR amplification of DNA extracted from avian blood infected with Haemoproteus fails to produce false positive markers

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the effect of Haemoproteus infections of the blood of Rock Doves on the use of false positive markers created by random amplified polymorphic DNA. The lack of amplification is discussed.
