The genetic basis of eyespot size in the butterfly Bicycles anynana: an analysis of line crosses

Article Abstract:

Eyespot size in the butterfly Bicycles anynana and its genetic basis are discussed based on an analysis of line crosses. Evidence for cytoplasmic effects was not found, but the data were consistent with the presence of one or more loci on the X-chromosome. Lande's modification of the Castle-Wright estimator was used to estimate the minimum number of genes contributing to the difference between the two lines. Dominance was found to have a role; epistasis likely is a factor.

Lack of response to artificial selection on the slope of reaction norms for seasonal polyphenism in the butterfly Bicyclus anynana

Article Abstract:

The tropical butterfly Bicyclus anynana has been studied to look at the extent to which sensitivity to temperature is affected by selection. The species shows adaptive phenotypic plasticity in response to wet-dry seasonality.

The evolution-development interface and advances with the eyespot patterns of Bicyclus butterflies

Article Abstract:

The evolution-development interface and advances in research into eyespot patterns of Bicyclus butterflies and how data on the developmental genetics of such traits can help in describing and analyzing evolutionary constraints are discussed. Animal color patterns studies have offered some of the very successful analyses of evolution of diversity.
