Metabolism of plant polysaccharides by Leucoagaricus gongylophorus, the symbiotic fungus of the leaf-cutting ant Atta sexdens L
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the metabolism of plant polysaccharides by Leucoagaricus gongylophorus. Strains of L. gongyulophorus were isolated from various nests of Atta sexdens L. while the culture medium was filtered using a 0.45-micron-pore-size Millipore filter. The concentration of cellulose or starch hydrolysis products was computed with glucose as the standard. Results indicated that L. gongylophorus can utilize high levels of pectinase and pectin degradation to macerate leaf tissues and obtain nutrients.

De novo synthesis of 4,5-dimethoxycatechol and 2,5-dimethoxyhydroquinone by the brown rot fungus Gloephyllum trabeum
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the de novo synthesis of 4,5-dimethoxycatechol (DMC) and 2,5-dimethoxyhydroquinone (DMH) by the brown rot fungus Gloephyllum trabeum. DMC and DMH were isolated from stationary cultures of the brown rot fungus Gloeophyllum trabeum growing on a glucose mineral medium protected from light. Results indicate multiple roles of DMC in fungal brown rot including stabilizing Fe(III) for reduction to Fe(II) and thereby increasing the availability of iron for extracellular Fenton's reactions.
