Microbial diversity in uranium mine waste heaps
Article Abstract:
A wide range of microbes appears to exist in uranium mine waste heaps, indicating the potential for bacterial leaching of pollutants from these sites. Samples taken from two uranium heaps in Germany revealed the presence of a variety of lithotrophic and chemoorganotropic leach bacteria thriving up to a depth of 1.5 to 2 m. Microcalorimetry was used to measure the metabolic activity of iron- and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria. Thiobacilli were the predominant microorganism.

Influence of storage on monodispersed cells of Mycobacterium terrae used for quantitative carrier test prEN 14563
Article Abstract:
Quantitative carrier tests were carried out with monodispersed cells of Mycobacterium terrae using ortho-phthaldialdehyde (OPA) and coco fatty aminoxethylate as biocides. In contrast to OPA, with coco fatty aminoxethylate the reductions obtained with freshly homogenized mycobacteria were significantly higher than those obtained with mycobacteria kept in the refrigerator for four days.

Influence of applied volume on efficacy of 3-minute surgical reference disinfection method prEN 12791
Article Abstract:
European reference method prEN 12791 prescribes that the hands must be kept wet with the reference alcohol for 3 min regardless of the applied volume. A study is conducted to determine whether the applied volume of the reference disinfectant n-propanol influences the effect on the resident hand flora.
