Mitochondrial DNA variability and Wolbachia infection in two sibling woodlice species

Article Abstract:

An investigation of mitochondrial DNA variability and of Wolbachia infection carried out in two sibling woodlice species in seven populations is discussed. Host reproductive changes caused by Wolbachia enhance spread of a symbiont in infected populations and the infected cytoplasm goes up in frequency, hitchiking, as it were, at the expense of uninfected cytoplasm and usually reducing genetic polymorphism.

Origin and colonization history of the white-clawed crayfish, Austropotamobius pallipes, in Ireland

Article Abstract:

Research has been conducted on white-clawed crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes in Ireland. The authors have investigated the origin of A. pallipes via the use of molecular markers including mtDNA, and the results suggest that crayfish complex has been introduced to Ireland by human from western French populations.

Drastic bottlenecks in the endangered crayfish species Austropotamobius pallipes in Spain and implications for its colonization history

Article Abstract:

Bottlenecks in the endangered crayfish species Austropotamobius pallipes in Spain are discussed. Lack of genetic variation might be explained by human introduction, selection and recent or ancient historical events. The merits of the various explanations are discussed.
