The 220-kDa vitelline coat glycoprotein mediates sperm binding in the polarized egg of Unio elongatulus through O-linked oligosaccharides
Article Abstract:
The 220-kDa vitelline coat (VC) glycoprotein (gp220) mediates sperm binding in the fertilized egg of the clam Unio elongatus through O-linked oligosaccharides. Researchers used immunofluorescence to observe the two glycoproteins most common on the VC, the 220-kDa proteins and the 18--kDa protein. The 188-kDA protein is spread throughout the VC, but the 220-kDA glycoproteins are concentrated at the crater portion of the vegetal pole, where the sperm enters. Further examination showed only 220-kDA protein interacted with the sperm and that only 0-linked oligosaccharides from the sperm were involved in binding.

Sperm competition and sperm length in shorebirds
Article Abstract:
Total sperm length and the length of the midpiece and tail are substantially longer in socially nonmonogamous shorebird species than in socially monogamous species. Connections between sperm size and both social mating system and relative testis size support the view that sperm competition has played a role in the evolution of sperm morphology in shorebirds. Research is now required to quantify the hydrodynamic properties of sperm and to establish how differences in the size of each element affect sperm swimming ability.
