Molecular genetics under an embryologist's microscope: Jean Brachet, 1909-1988
Article Abstract:
Jean Brachet was an embryologist by training, but he is considered by some as the 'father of RNA.' From the beginning, he was convinced that embryonic development, as well as other biological phenomena, could be explained in chemical terms. Well before the Golden Age of Molecular Biology, Brachet saw the correlation between the quantity of RNA in a cell and its capacity to synthesize proteins. Twenty years before the synthesis of the central dogma, Brachet had distilled its central points, namely, that DNA makes RNA which makes protein. To his students and employees, Brachet will be remembered as an iconoclastic, opinionated but unselfish and generous scientist.

Using yeast genetics to generate a research environment
Article Abstract:
Yeast genetics is both an effective and appropriate method of teaching experimental genetics to students. Being a unicellular and eukaryotic organism possessing a complete sexual life cycle, yeast, such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae, offers several features that could be used to expand student's knowledge about genetic concepts and processes. Genetics education can be more effective, however, when teachers and scientists work together. This would enable them to pool their knowledge and experiences and would allow the immediate identification and solution of technical and theoretical problems that arise in the classroom environmet.

Quantitative genetics in Edinburgh: 1947-1980
Article Abstract:
The Animal Breeding and Genetics Research Organization (ABGRO) was set up by Britain's Agricultural Research Council in 1945 in order to improve productivity and reduce imports. The Genetics section of ABGRO was originally located in London, it was transferred to Edinburgh in 1947. As a result, a prolific and honored tradition of animal genetics and breeding fluorished in the area. The significant contributions of ABGRO's members are summarized.
