Monoclonal antibodies recognizing nitrite oxidoreductase of Nitrobacter hamburgensis, N. winogradskyi, and N. vulgaris
Article Abstract:
Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) Hyb 153.1, Hyb 153.2 and Hyb 153.3 recognize proteins with a molecular mass of 64,000 Da or 115,000 Da, which is close to the molecular masses of the alpha and beta subunits of the Nitrobacter hamburgensis nitrite oxidoreductase (NOR). The MAbs also recognize the NORs of N. winogradskyi and N. vulgaris. The MAbs fail to react with the Escherichia coli nitrate reductase which is similar to the NOR beta subunit. The application of the MAbs shows that the level of NOR depends on growth conditions and is highest in N. hamburgensis cells growing mixotrophically.

Maintenance energy demand and starvation recovery dynamics of Nitrosomonas europaea and Nitrobacter winogradskyi cultivated in a retentostat with complete biomass retention
Article Abstract:
Nitrosomonas europaea and Nitrobacter winogradskyi were grown in ammonia-limited and nitrite-limited conditions, respectively, in a retentostat with complete biomass retention. The maximum specific oxygen consumption rate measured by mass spectrometric analysis of inlet and outlet gas oxygen content amounted to approximately 45 micro moles of oxygen. When bacteria were starved for different time periods, the spontaneous respiratory activity after an ammonia or nitrite pulse decreased with increasing duration of the previous starvation time period.

Genome sequence of the chemolithoautotrophic nitrite-oxidizing bacterium Nitrobacter winogradskyi Nb-255
Article Abstract:
The genome sequencing and analysis of the alphaproteobacterium Nitrobacter winogradskyi revealed a single circular chromosome of 3,402,093 bp encoding 3,143 predicted proteins. Approximately 10 percent of the Nitrobacter winogradskyi genome codes for genes involved in transport and secretion, including the presence of transporters for various organic-nitrogen molecules.
