Mortality of prairie falcons during the fledging-dependence period

Article Abstract:

Mortality rates of the prairie falcons during the fledging-dependence period in southwestern Idaho are high, but consistent between the years despite a decline in the primary prey of falcons in 1993. The key cause of mortality is the predation by the great horned owls, in addition to the presence of hematophagous ectoparasites in aeries. Survival is lower during the fledging-dependence period, in contrast to the incubation or the nestling periods.
