Motors driving mRNA localization: New insights from in vivo imaging

Article Abstract:

mRNA cellular mechanisms vary, but active movement often seems to be involved. Two approaches may provide ways to clearly define roles for motors in mRNA localization, by demonstrating a physical link between a localized mRNA and a motor, or to monitor localized mRNA movements in vivo. Efforts to demonstrate a direct link have focuses on RNA-binding proteins that recognize mRNA and are needed for its localization. The monitoring of mRNA movements in vivo presents experimental difficulties, but one approach involves injecting fluorescently labeled RNAs directly into the cytoplasm.

A novel function for SMN, the spinal muscular atrophy disease gene product, in pre-mRNA splicing

Article Abstract:

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a familiar motor neuron degenerative disease because of reduced levels of, or mutations in, the Survival of Motor Neurons (SMN) protein. It was observed that a dominant-negative mutant SMN, SMNDeltaN27, induces a drastic reorganization of sn RNPs in the nucleus. Moreover, SMNDeltaN27 restricts pre-mRNA splicing in vitro, while wild-type SMN induces splicing.
