Myc: A weapon of mass destruction

Article Abstract:

The highly regulated expression of Myc family transcription factors that are closely related to growth as well as inhibition of terminal differentiation and induction of apoptosis are found in mammalian cells. Abrogation of the apoptotic pathway in Myc over expressing cells leads to progression of cancer and dE2F1 is identified as a critical component of pathways that usually restrict the ability of growth.

Nodal flow and the generation of left-right asymmetry

Article Abstract:

The discovery of nodal flow is summarized and the mechanisms by which LR symmetry is broken by nodal monocilia are discussed. Evidence suggests that the leftward movement of membrane-sheathed particles result in the activation of noncanonical Hedgehog signaling pathway, an asymmetric elevation in intracellular Ca(super 2+) and changes in gene expression.

The trithorax group protein lid is a trimethyl histone H3K4 demethylase required for dMyc-induced cell growth

Article Abstract:

A genetic screen in Drosophila was developed to identify the trithorax group protein Little imaginal discs (Lid) as a regulator of dMyc-induced cell growth. The findings demonstrate that Lid is a JmjC-dependent trimethyl H3K4 demethylase in vivo and that this enzymatic activity is negatively regulated by dMyc, which binds to Lid's JmjC domain.
