Selected chitinase genes in cultured and uncultured marine bacteria in teh alpha- and gamma-subclasses of the proteobacteria

Article Abstract:

Both the alpha and gamma proteobacteria have the group I chitinase gene, but it is absent in the Cytophaga-Flavobacter group. The gene also occurs in some arthropod-infecting viruses.

Natural assemblages of marine proteobacteria and members of teh Cytophaga-Flavobacter cluster consuming low- and high-molecular-weight dissolved organic matter

Article Abstract:

No single bacterial phylum is responsible for degrading dissolved organic matter in the ocean. The degradation of dissolved organic matter differs depending on which phylogenetic group is involved, and does not correlate with the abundance of each particular group.

Chitinases from uncultured marine microorganisms

Article Abstract:

The hydrolysis of biopolymers such as chitin involves genes that encode enzymes. Libraries of genomic DNA isolated from coastal and estuarine waters were constructed to isolate representative and abundant chitinase genes from uncultivated marine bacteria. A microtiter plate assay revealed approximately one positive clone for every 500 clones screened in the coastal library. Research findings suggest that culture-dependent methods do not greatly underestimate the portion of marine bacterial communities capable of chitin degradation.
