Nitrogen availability to Pseudomonas fluorescens DF57 is limited during decomposition of barley straw in bulk soil and in the barley rhizosphere
Article Abstract:
Nitrogen availability to Pseudomonas fluorescens DF57 is discussed relative to its limitation during decomposition of barley straw in the barley rhizosphere and in bulk soil. Availability was studied by introduction of a bioluminescent reporter strain to model systems. Activities of cellulolytic microorganisms may have an effect on availability of specific nutrients and energy to organisms lacking in hydrolytic enzyme activities.

Bacterial origin and community composition in the barley phytosphere as a function of habitat and presowing conditions
Article Abstract:
Research reveals that the phytosphere of developing barley plants exhibit discrete microbial communities in the rhizosphere localized to endorhizosphere, rhizoplane, and rhizosphere soil of plants. Analysis of the rhizoplane community shows that rhizoplane bacteria originated from the surrounding soil instead of the root tissue or the seed.

Green fluorescent protein-marked Pseudomonas fluorescens: localization, viability, and activity in the natural barley rhizosphere
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine distribution and activity patterns of Pseudomonas fluorescens in the root environment of barley plants. Results show that at normal soil moisture levels the bacteria formed microcolonies around the plant roots with differing viability and activity characteristics.
