Nuclear receptor coactivator ACTR is a novel histone acetyltransferase and forms a multimeric activation complex with P/CAF and CBP/p300
Article Abstract:
Researchers have been able to identify ACTR, a cofactor which directly binds nuclear receptors and stimulates their transcriptional activities in a hormone-dependent way. This cofactor seems to exert its regulatory effects in two separate biochemical stages. It firstly associates with both CBP/p300 and P/CAF and therefore acts to recruit two transcriptional cofactors to the nuclear receptor-DNA complex. It secondly possesses intrinsic histone acetyltransferase (HAT) activity. It appears that nuclear receptors recruit an enzymatic complex which includes at least three separate classes of mutually interacting HATs.

A viral mechanism for inhibition of p300 and PCAF acetyltransferase activity
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the mechanism of transcriptional regulation by the protein coactivators, p300/CBP and p300/CBP-associated factor (PCAF) histone acetyltransferases (HATs). Results showed that the adenoviral E1A oncoprotein can inhibit the HAT activity of both p300/CBP and PCAF. The E1A was also found to prevent nucleosomal histone modifications of p53 acetylation. These findings indicate that transcription can be regulated by modulating the HAT activity.
