Oligopeptide permease in Borrelia burgdorferi: putative peptide-binding components encoded by both chromosomal and plasmid loci

Article Abstract:

An oligopeptide permease is postulated to be a virulence factor in Borrelia burgdorferi. Genes perceived to code for this protein were identified and characterized. A total of five genes, three chromosomal genes and two plasmid genes were identified. Northern blot studies revealed that each gene is transcribed independently of the others and that transcription is initiated with temperature change in one of the plasmid genes.

Immunological and genetic characterization of Borrelia burgdorferi BapA and EppA proteins

Article Abstract:

Research has been conducted on paralogous genes bapA and eppA found in Lyme disease spirochaete isolates. The results of immunological analysis of serum samples have demonstrated that bapA gene sequences are stable but the encoded BarA proteins do not provoke strong immunological response, and that EppA proteins are much more antigenic but have different sequence between different bacteria.

Surface exposure and protease insensitivity of Borrelia burgdorferi Erp (OspEF-related) lipoproteins

Article Abstract:

Research reveals that the infectious Erp family of lipoproteins from Borrelia burgdorferi are exposed to the outer environment, which facilitate interactions between the bacteria and the host tissues. Protease resistance of some Erp proteins suggests that protease cleavage sites are hidden in such proteins.
