Increased levels of markers of microbial exposure in homes with indoor storage of organic household waste

Article Abstract:

Results demonstrate that indoor storage of organic waste leads to microbial contaminants and textile floor coverings is one of the main contributors. Data suggest that this may lead to bioaerosol-related respiratory symptoms.

Optimization of airborne endotoxin exposure assessment: effects of filter type, transport conditions, extraction solutions, and storage of samples and extracts

Article Abstract:

The joined effects of transport conditions, storage of samples, extraction solution, storage of extracts and filter type in the European Committee of Standardization (CEN) protocol for endotoxin exposure were studied. Results conclude that the airborne endotoxin concentration was highly infuenced by extraction solution.

Measurement of beta-(1 to 3)-glucans in occupational and home environments with an inhibition enzyme immunoassay

Article Abstract:

A beta-(1 to 3)-glucan inhibition enzyme immunoassay has been developed that can be used to measure levels of beta-(1 to 3)-glucan in dust samples from residential and occupational environments. Glucan extraction of dust samples in water is done by heat treatment as aqueous extracts lack detectable beta-(1 to 3)-glucan levels. High levels of beta-(1 to 3)-glucan are found in occupational and residential dust samples. The new assay provides a specific, sensitive and reproducible method for measuring environmental glucans and assessing beta(1 to 3)-glucans content in dust and home environment.
