Patterns of mtDNA variation in Hawaiian freshwater fishes: the phylogeographic consequences of amphidromy

Article Abstract:

The phylogeographic structure of four species of Hawaiian freshwater fishes: Sicyopterus stimpsoni, Lentipes concolor, Stenogobius hawaiiensis and Awaous guamensis, was studied from samples collected in different sites. Results indicated the presence of genetic variability in these fishes with no evidence of strong geographic structure among island populations. Gene flow among island populations was most likely the cause of this finding. Amphidromy was found to impede speciation in these fishes and provide them with evolutionary flexibility atypical of more isolated island faunas.

Neutrality tests on mtDNA: unusual results from nematodes

Article Abstract:

McDonald-Kreitman (MK) tests were undertaken on mitochondrial ND4 sequences in three pairs of nematode species. Each showed a deficit of replacement polymorphism, suggesting that adaptive evolution occurs more efficiently in nematode mtDNA than in mtDNA of vertebrates or insects. However it may be that the nematode pattern arises from silent-site saturation resulting from the way in which nematode mtDNA evolves.
