Phenotypic and molecular characterization of a Brucella strain isolated from a minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata)

Article Abstract:

A Brucella strain was isolated from the liver and spleen of a minke whale, Balaenoptera acutorostrata, using conventional typing methods. The gram staining of the isolated strain, termed as B202R, showed minute, Gram-negative coccobacilli and demonstrated catalase, oxidase and urease activities. It was also discovered that the nucleotide sequence of the isolated strain belonged to the genus Brucella which had distinct characteristics that cannot be classified with other known Brucella species.

DNA polymorphism at the omp-31 locus of Brucella spp.: evidence for a large deletion in Brucella abortus, and other species-specific markers

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the DNA polymorphism at the omp-31 locus of Brucella stains to determine if the omp-31 can improve the differentiation among the brucellae. The Southern blot hybridization was used to analyze the DNA polymorphism. Results have shown that the Brucella abortus lacks a large DNA fragment of about 10 kb containing omp-31 and flanking DNA. Moreover, the brucellae can be effectively differentiated by omp-31.
