Phylogenetic position of the spirochetal genus Cristispira
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine the phylogenetic position of the genus Cristispira. Techniques involving the sequencing of cloned 16SrRNA genes amplified directly from environmental samples were used. In situ hybridization experiments verified that the cloned 16S rRNA gene was derived from Cristispira-like organisms found in crystalline style material. Results showed that the genus Cristispira represents a genus separate from other spirochetal genera included in the family Spirochaetaceae.

Evidence that a new antibiotic flavone glycoside chemically defends the sea grass Thialassia testudinum against zoosporic fungi
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to prove that sea grass secondary metabolites were responsible for defending Thalassia testudinum against zoosporic fungi. Results demonstrate that extracts of T testudinum leaf tissues inhibited the growth of Schizochytrium aggregatum and prevented the attachment of S aggregatum motile zoospores to an extract-impregnated substrate. Findings provide the first complete evidence that a secondary metabolite defends the sea grass against microorganisms.

Characteristics of garden dormice that contribute to their capacity of reservoirs for lyme disease spirochetes
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the contribution of garden dormice to the epizootiology of Lyme disease. To study the characteristics that promote their contribution of spirochetal infections to the vector population, the reservoir capacity for the pathogens were compared to that of other sympatric hosts. Results suggest that the garden dormice population contributes five- to sevenfold more infections to the vector population than the mouse population does.
