Physiology of hot flashes

Article Abstract:

This article exmines the physiological causes of hot flashes in symptomatic and asymptomatic menopausal women. The author finds that trigger mechanisms may by a small increase in temperature preceding hot flases within a reduced thermoneutral zone; the role of estrogen in eliminating hot flashes is discussed.

The Raymond Pearl Memorial Lecture, 1997: the quest for medical normalcy - who needs it?

Article Abstract:

An argument is presented against the use of norms in health and medical research. It is posited that adherence to norms undermines the validity of natural selection, or biological variation, which is necessary to promote evolutionary changes that may deviate from norms but improve adaptation.

Birth intervals and early childhood mortality in a migrating Mennonite community

Article Abstract:

Research on rural Mennonites supports the theory that short birth intervals decrease infant survivability across a wide range of factors. Longer subsequent birth intervals reduced mortality for all maternal age categories and in neonatal, postneonatal and early childhood categories.
