Population dynamics within a microbial consortium during growth on diesel fuel in saline environments

Article Abstract:

The diversity and dynamics of a bacterial community extracted from an exploited oil field with high natural soil salinity near Comodoro Rivadavia in Patagonia (Argentina) are investigated. The combination of cytometric sorting with molecular characterization has helped in monitoring community adaptation and in identifying active and proliferating subcommunities.

Carbon conversion efficiency and limits of productive bacterial degradation of methyl tert-butyl ether and related compounds

Article Abstract:

A theoretical study was conducted for investigating the utilization of the fuel oxygenate methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and related compounds by microorganisms. The results have shown that in situ MTBE concentrations are below the threshold, thus enabling productive degrading.

Continuous synthesis and excertion of the compatible solute ectoine by a transgenic, nonhalophilic bacterium

Article Abstract:

An engineered Escherichia coli strain carrying the ectoine genes of the halophilic bacterium Chromohalobacter salexigens are described. The recombinant Escherichia coli strain is promising for industrial application.
