Precipitation of cadmium by Clostridium thermoaceticum
Article Abstract:
The cadmium tolerance of Clostridium thermoaceticum and the mechanisms employed by the organism were studied. Cadmium concentrations were determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The presence of localized areas of cadmium precipitation were revealed by electron microscopic analysis. It wasfound that the presence of cadmium in nonsulfidogenic anaerobic environments causes the element to become insolubly precipitated with sulfur.

Ribotyping for strain characterization of Clostridium perfringens isolates from food poisoning cases and outbreaks
Article Abstract:
Thirty-four Clostridium perfrigens strains were characterized through ribotyping. The strains were derived from 10 cases of food poisoning and outbreaks. Food and stool isolate ribotypes in eight food poisoning cases were observed to be similar and only two Clostridium perfringens isolates exhibited unique patterns. Results demonstrate the usefulness of ribotyping in examining Clostridium perfringens isolate genetics.

Conversion of paraffin oil to alcohols by Clostridium thermosaccharolyticum
Article Abstract:
Analysis of the conversion of paraffin oil overlay into butanol and ethanol by solventogenic cells of Clostridium thermosaccharolyticum reveals that the conversion requires the presence of more than one fermentable carbohydrate, oxygen and hourly N2 purging with scraping of the fermentation vessel. Production of solvents following exponential growth is similar to the production of secondary metabolites.
