Predators of quail eggs, and the evidence of the remains: implications for nest predation studies

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine the consumption of Japanese Quail eggs by captive predators to determine possible biases of nest predation experiments and to test the reliability of predator identification through egg remains. Quail eggs were offered to reptiles that were kept in captivity at a number of zoological parks in Brazil. Results indicated that the presence of scratches on quail eggs could be utilized in minimizing small-mouthed mammal biases associated with nest predation experiments.

Predation on Japanese Quail vs. House Sparrow eggs in artificial nests: small eggs reveal small predators

Article Abstract:

Research comparing the use of House Sparrow eggs and Japanese Quail eggs to study egg predation in 40 nests located at forest edges and interiors in MA is presented. Six predator species were identified with white-footed mice being the most common.

Differences in depredation by small predators limit the use of plasticine and Zebra Finch eggs in artificial-nest studies

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the role played by voles, mice and other small mammals in the predation of eggs belonging to Neotropical migrant passerines. The effectiveness of studies using plasticine eggs is discussed.
