Progressive spatial restriction of Sek-1 and Krox-20 gene expression during hindbrain segmentation

Article Abstract:

Previous studies have suggested that hindbrain expression is controlled by metameric segmentation during transcription. In this study, expression of the zinc-finger gene Krox-20 and the receptor tyrosine kinase gene Sek-1 in the mouse and chick hindbrain was restricted to rhombomeres (r)3 and 5 using whole-mount in situ hybridization and immunocytochemistry to determine the mechanisms that regulate expression of these genes. The results revealed that establishment of r3/r5 segmental domains regulate the process of hindbrain patterning.

The sequence of regulatory events controlling the expression of the gammaD-crystallin gene during fibroblast growth factor-mediated rat lens fiber cell differentiation

Article Abstract:

Particular transcription factors have a strong influence on the developmental regulation of gene expression. However, these factors can only exert control if the chromatin is primed for transcription. In this study, the events essential to the transcriptional activation of the rat gammaD-crystallin gene during in vitro differentiation of rat lens fiber cells are discussed. The results revealed that timing of appearance of transacting factors controls the activation and shutdown of the gammaD-crystallin promoter.

A novel regulatory region is required for trophoblast-specific transcription in transgenic mice

Article Abstract:

A regulatory region of a trophoblastic-specific gene called 4311 in transgenic mice has been characterized. The region expresses reporter genes to cells that will become trophoblast tissue. Researchers found both the transcription start site and a 340-bp region 3.7 kb upstream of the transcription start that expresses the reporter gene lacZ in cells of the developing spongiotrophoblast.
