Proposals for optimization of the international phage typing system for Listeria monocytogenes: combined analysis of phage lytic spectrum and variability of typing results

Article Abstract:

Analysis of the results generated from the tests of phage lytic reaction variability, phage spectrum specificity and typeability of 35 phages helps optimize the phage typing system for Listeria monocytogenes. New proposals are suggested to modify the present system to an optimal bacteriophage set for general use. The phage typing results generated from the proposed optimized set are compared with those from the international set.

Bacteriophage-triggered defense systems: phage adaptation and design improvements

Article Abstract:

Altered bacteriophages from cultures of Lactococcus lactis harboring phi31 were isolated and characterized. These phages have altered activity in the induction of the suicide cassette in the bacteria. The efficiency of the suicide cassette was enhanced with modifications in promoter strength, increasing restriction levels and combining abortive type defenses in the phage defense arsenal of the bacteria.

Low sensitivity of Listeria monocytogenes to quaternary ammonium compounds

Article Abstract:

Listeria monocytogenes is becoming resistant to quaternary ammonium disinfectants and the resistance genes are not carried by a plasmid. Most likely the resistance is due to changes in the cell wall that confer an intrinsic resistance.
