Public concern for private funding

Article Abstract:

The source of the money, whether from public or industry, is important in determining the type of research that gets funded as well as the direction that research may take. During the last several years, the percentage of industry funding relative to public funding has grown, while federal funding to basic and applied research remains unchanged , and experts believe that industry funding and government funding should be at the same level, since too much dependence on private funding may shift the focus of independent research to development.

Stopping the cycle

Article Abstract:

Stefan Kappe, a malaria researcher is studying the way parasites develop first in mosquitoes and then in the host liver before they would infect blood. He has identified components of the Plasmodium genome that are essential for infection and development inside the host, and is working to develop a live attenuated malaria vaccine by deleting some of these key infectivity genes which could offer more than 90% protection against malaria.

The malaria hut

Article Abstract:

The hut in the tiny village of Wankama, Niger is turned into a laboratory to improve the forecasts of malaria epidemics, by relating global and regional information. This work would ultimately contribute a component to a disease early warning system and would enable government to prepare for an epidemic by spraying insecticides or distributing mosquito nets with reliable forecasts.
