RNA polymerase II holoenzyme recruitment is sufficient to remodel chromatin at the yeast PHO5 promoter
Article Abstract:
A hybridization technique was used to study fusion protein-mediated transcriptional activation and chromatin remodeling at the PHO5 promoter in yeast. Non-classic activators were used to target the RNA polymerase II holoenzyme to the PHO5 promoter in the absence of a classic activating region. The results demonstrated that PHO5 transcription is activated in all test cases and that the chromatin structure of the promoter is disrupted. It was also evident that recruitment of the holoenzyme or related proteins is enough for chromatin remodeling to proceed.

Linker histones are not essential and affect chromatin condensation in vivo
Article Abstract:
Experiments to disrupt the genes for linker histones in Tetrahymena thermophila show that linker histones are not essential for survival of cells but are involved in compacting and packaging chromatin. Micronuclei contain a group of linking histones called MicLH, which are coded by the MLH gene. Macronuclei contain the linking histone H1, which is coded by the HHO gene. Cells with a disrupted MicLH gene have large micronuclei but normal-sized macronuclei. Cells with a disrupted H1 gene have large macronuclei but normal-sized micronuclei.

The multiprotein complex containing SWR1 interacts with histones H2A.Z that explains how histone variants are incorporated into the nucleosome outside of S phase. The results concluded that SWR1 complex is a chromatin-remodeling machine affecting the integrity of the octamer core.
