Regeneration: if they can do it, why can't we?

Article Abstract:

This article examines vertebrate regeneration with respect to the biological principles and molecular aspects and their implication in the current research emplyoing stem cells and nuclear cloning. The origin, multipotentiality, and differentiation of the progenitor cells, blastema cells, are discussed in the context of mammalian tissue regeneration.

The molecular diversity of Dscam is functionally required for neuronal wiring specificity in Drosophila

Article Abstract:

The analysis of Dscam null neurons demonstrated an essential role of Dscam for growth and directed extension of axon branches. The findings provide evidence that a very large number of structurally unique receptor isoforms is required to ensure fidelity and precision of neuronal connectivity.

Regeneration and transdetermination: New tricks from old cells

Article Abstract:

A longstanding question in regeneration biology regarding the way pluripotency is achieved during regeneration is addressed. The cell cycle and growth characteristics of multipotent regenerating and transdetermining Drosophila cells are examined.
