Regulation by proteolysis: energy-dependent proteases and their targets
Article Abstract:
Rapid degradation of normally unstable regulatory proteins involve ATP -dependent proteases in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. These highly unstable proteins are essential in various developmental processes and in emergency responses. The energy dependent degradation process, with the use of ATP scannning, increases the selectivity of substrate targeting and degrade large substrates in an increased processive manner.

Regulatory subunits of energy-dependent proteases
Article Abstract:
The existence of ATP-independent peptidases with compartmentalized structures suggests the occurrence of multicomponent ATP-dependent proteases that mediate most selective degradation of protein substrates. Substrate recognition was displaced from the proteolytically active subunits to the ATPases. The regulation and specificity of proteolysis by ATP-dependent proteases depends on accessory and regulatory components.
