Response of a soil bacterial community to grassland succession as monitored by 16S rRNA levels of the predominant ribotypes

Article Abstract:

Results indicate that composition of bacterial ribosome types exhibit definite shifts in response to grassland succession. An initial increase in ribosome level following cessation of agricultural production and fertilization correlated with the collapse of Lolium perenne population and organic matter mineralization. Data further show positive correlation between soil bacterial activity and ribosome level.

Phylogeny of the main bacterial 16S rRNA sequences in Drentse A grassland soils (the Netherlands)

Article Abstract:

An examination of the main bacteria in peaty, acid grassland soils in the Netherlands found that approximately 65% of all the bacterial ribosomes in Drentse A grassland soil originated from Firmicutes. Bacillus species were apparently the most active bacteria, with about half of the sequences derived from it. Other sequences similar to those of gram-positive bacteria were found to be distantly related to Firmicutes with a high G+C content, while others were related to Proteobacteria.

In situ detection of an uncultured predominant bacillus in Dutch grassland soils

Article Abstract:

An uncultured predominant Bacillus bacterium was found in grassland soils in the Drentse A agricultural research area in the Netherlands. The microorganism was observed to contain ribotype DA001 16S rRNA, which was detected through a molecular survey of the main 16S rRNA sequences in these soils. Ribotype DA001 is closely related to the 16S rRNA sequences of cultured Bacillus benzoevorans strains to several other sequences in the same Drentse A 16S rRDA clone library.
