Role of PKA in the timing of developmental events in Dictyostelium cells
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the effect of cyclic AMP (cAMP)-dependent protein kinase (PKA) on the timing of developmental events in Dictyostelium cells. PKA functions in both prespore and prestalk cells to regulate the relative timing of terminal differentiation during culmination. A positive feedback loop leads to the swift release of a signal peptide, SDF-2, when prestalk cells are exposed to low levels of SDF-2. Results suggest that multiple inputs control PKA activity to monitor the relative timing of differentiations in Dictyostelium.

Transcription factor CREM coordinates the timing of hepatocyte proliferation in the regenerating liver
Article Abstract:
The transcription factor CREM (cAMP-responsive promoter element modulator) apparently regulates the proliferation of hepatocytes during liver regeneration. A 10-hr delay in the cell proliferation wave occurs when CREM is lacking in mice that have undergone partial hepatectomy. DNA synthesis, mitosis and phosphorylated histone H-3 positive cells are reduced. Deregulation of the expression of cyclins A, B, D1, E, and cdc2, and of c-fos and tyrosine aminotransferase also occurs.
