SAPKs and transcription factors do the nucleocytoplasmic tango

Article Abstract:

Studies of a new group of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) suggest a mechanism that determines specificity of gene transcription. The mechanism indicated by research on stress-activated MAP kinases (SAPKs) involves interdependent nucleocytoplasmic transport of transcription factor and MAPKs. In addition, Sty1/Spc1 kinase from fission yeast cells provides a good homolog for mammalian SAPKs.

The induction of sexual development and virulence in the smut fungus Ustilago maydis depends on Crk1, a novel MAPK protein

Article Abstract:

Fuz7, a mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase involved in mating and pathogenesis in Ustilago maydis, is required to activate Crk1, most likely through phosphorylation of the TXY motif. The reasons for sterility and avirulence of crk1-defecient cells are examined. Results reveal that Crk1 is required for transcription of prf1, a central regulator of mating and pathogenicity in Ustilago maydis.

Targeting of cohesin by transcriptionally silent chromatin

Article Abstract:

Flurospectroscopy microcopy and site-specific recombination is used to characterize interactions between the newly replicated copies of the silent HMR mating-type locus. Results suggest that the silent chromatin targets and maintains cohesion function by a mechanism that involves topological linkage of the ring-shaped complex to individual chromatids.
