Sequence variability of FrpB, a major iron-regulated outer-membrane protein in the pathogenic neisseriae

Article Abstract:

The amino acid sequence of the FrpB iron-regulated outer-membrane protein of Neisseria meningitidis strains was analyzed to determine its usefulness as a vaccine componenent. The frpB gene from different strains of Neisseriae meningitidis and gonococcal strains exhibited sequence variability in the 350 to 390 or loop 7 region. The meningiococcal FrpB protein also exhibited the longest surface-exposed loop which also contains the epitopes of eight bactericidal monoclonal antibodies.

Genetic characterization of pilin glycosylation in Neisseria meningitidis

Article Abstract:

Results show that three genes are involved in the glycosylation of the pilin in Neisseria meningitidis. Data further indicate that the glycan structures of the pilin are trisaccharides as revealed by the database search of the amino acid sequence homologies of the three genes.

The genetic basis of the phase variation repertoire of lipopolysaccharide immunotypes in Neisseria meningitidis

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to determine the genetic basis for the structural differences among the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) immunotypes in Neisseria meningitidis. The data show that the phase variation in LPS can be classified into two distinct groups as revealed by lgt loci.
