Survey of archaeal diversity reveals an abundance of halophilic Archaea in a low-salt, sulfide- and sulfur-rich spring

Article Abstract:

The Zodletone Spring archaeal community within the microbial mat and at the spring source was surveyed and an unexpected abundance of members of the family halobacteriaceae was revealed even though the spring water had low concentration of salt and was rich in sulfide and sulfur. Halobacteriales need not be restricted to high-salt habitats and could play an important role in sulfur reduction in the ecosystem.

Identification and isolation of a Castellaniella species important during biostimulation of an acidic nitrate- and uranium contaminated aquifer

Article Abstract:

A study to identify and isolate Castellaniella species important during biostimulation of an acidic nitrate- and uranium contaminated aquifer was conducted. It was found that biostimulation of high-nitrate subsurface sediments with ethanol results in a decrease in bacterial diversity and enriches members of class Betaproteobacteria, members of new genus Castellaniella which are capable of nitrate reduction.

Phylogenetic and metabolic diversity of Planctomycetes from anaerobic, sulfide- and sulfur-rich Zodletone Spring, Oklahoma

Article Abstract:

The phylogenetic diversity and metabolic capabilities of Planctomycetes phylum members were investigated in the anaerobic, sulfide- and sulfur-rich Zodletone Spring. Results indicated that anaerobic metabolic abilities are widely distributed among all Planctomycetes species and for growth and survival, carbohydrate fermentation and sulfur reduction may be the possible mechanism employed by them.
